Common Conditions Your Back Doctor Treats

July 15, 2022

Back pain is a complex issue and can have many variations depending on the cause. While you can resolve most forms of back pain with home treatment within a few weeks, some forms can continue disrupting your everyday routine.

Getting chronic or acute back pain treatment from a trusted physician is vital. We address below some common conditions your back doctor can remedy to get you back on your feet.

Arthritis

Spinal arthritis is the inflammation of the spine’s facet joints in the back or neck. Its symptoms include pain, stiffness, redness, swelling, and a decreased range of motion.

There are two types of spinal arthritis: osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Osteoarthritis is common in older patients and involves damage to the joint’s cartilage due to wear and tear over time.

Rheumatoid arthritis happens when the body’s immune system attacks the lining of the joint’s capsule, which becomes swollen and painful.

Non-surgical treatments for arthritis include pain medication and physical therapy. Lifestyle changes are also effective in lessening inflammation and reducing pain. In some severe cases, surgery may be an option to provide relief.

Herniated Disc

Another condition that causes back pain is lumbar disc disease or herniated disc. A herniated disc occurs from the breakdown or continued stress on the disc resulting from aging or a severe injury.

Symptoms of this condition include intermittent or continuous back pain and back muscle spasms. You may also experience weakness or numbness in the legs or feet.

Usually, doctors treat a herniated disc with conservative treatments, including bed rest, physical therapy, back support, and pain medicine. Surgery may be required when non-surgical methods no longer provide relief from the condition.

Sciatica

Lumbar radiculopathy, or sciatica, results in pain along your sciatic nerve. It starts from the back of the pelvis down to the back of the thigh. A herniated or bulging disc usually causes it, but sciatica can also result from obesity, poor posture, a tumor, a blood clot, or a nerve disorder.

Symptoms of sciatica include lower back pain and, in severe cases, numbness and weakness.

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medication, heat or cold application to sore muscles, and frequently moving can help minimize the condition’s symptoms. If sciatica persists, your doctor may repair the herniated disc to alleviate the pain.

Spinal Stenosis

Spinal stenosis occurs when the channel created by the bones of the spine narrows due to aging. That can put pressure on the spinal cord and cause back pain. Arthritis and changes in your spine’s discs can also cause this condition.

Depending on the severity, spinal stenosis can resolve with non-surgical options, including exercise and medication. If necessary, your doctor may recommend surgery to relieve the pressure on the spine.
