Steps to Take Before Visiting a Pain Clinic

June 9, 2023

Closeup Senior woman sitting on sofa holds her ankle injury, feeling pain. Health care and medical concept.

So, you have decided to visit a pain clinic for the management of your unbearable pain – that’s great! Now, your next step is to make an appointment at the pain clinic and prepare for your appointment.

Taking the time to prepare for your appointment beforehand can greatly enhance the quality of care you receive. Follow the simple steps below to make sure you are ready for your visit with your pain doctor.

1. Take Note of Your Symptoms

Before you visit a pain clinic, take a moment to think about your pain and other symptoms and document them. Take note of when your pain starts, its level of intensity, what factors worsen the pain, and what helps with pain relief. Make sure you record as much as you can so your pain doctor can figure out what type of pain you have, why it’s happening, and how to treat it better.

2. Make a List of Your Questions

It is possible that you may forget the questions and topics you want to discuss with your pain doctor during your visit. Keeping a notepad and a pen with you to note down any questions that come to your mind whenever you feel pain can help you remember what to ask your pain doctor during your visit. Make sure to bring your notepad with you to your appointment.

3. Bring Your Medical Records

For a successful visit, it is recommended to bring all your medical records with you. Your surgical history, history of chronic pain, and history of past injuries can provide your pain management doctor with important clues to the underlying cause of your pain.

Be sure to also bring your lab test reports and the results of any diagnostic imaging tests like X-rays, MRIs, or CT scans.

4. Bring Your Current Medications

If you are taking any medication for your pain management or any medication related to other conditions, bring them with you to your visit. You should also be sure to bring a record of all the medications you have taken in the past.

5. Bring a Family Member or Friend With You

It is a good idea to bring one of your family members or your friend with you who can help you remember your questions during the visit. Additionally, bringing someone with you can help you remember the information and knowledge you get about pain management during your appointment.
